Mangrove jack turns up in Eden

IT’S not unusual to hear of northern species such as the mangrove jack turning up a long way south of its usual haunts, with catches made by anglers in Sydney, Batemans Bay and Moruya in recent years.

This time though a wayward jack has turned up even further south at Eden, caught during a commercial haul by the trawler, Imlay, the South East Trawl Fishing Industry Association (SETFIA) reports.

According to Fisho’s fish expert Ben Diggles, jacks are commonly caught throughout our northern coastline from around Broome in the west to (usually) as far south as the rivers in the central coast of NSW.

Anyone who has ever caught a jack on sportfishing gear knows how hard these fish strike lures and powerfully charge for cover, making them a popular and challenging target.
