Triumphant return for Socorro

THE Shimano Socorro Spin is back, but long-time fans may have a bit of trouble recognising these new reels. With a glossy black XT-7 body and gold anodised AR-C spool, the cosmetics are remarkably different and internally it’s a much-improved reel as well.

With the SW designation they are built saltwater tough, so the Socorro is capable of handling anything in the jigging, spinning, trolling or bait fishing spectrum.

The new Socorros not only look different to their predecessors, but they come packed with a load of new features too. They have Shimano’s Hagane cold-forged gearing, four shielded A-RB bearings plus one roller bearing, X-Ship bearing supported pinion, and increased water resistance in key areas.

The waterproof Cross Carbon drag is another major improvement, and with this comes a major step up in drag capability.

There are four sizes in the new series: 5000, 6000, 8000 and 10000, with the first two having a retrieve speed of 4.6:1 and the beefy 8000 and 10000 models 4.9:1. The vented round handle knob is more comfortable to use with fast retrieves, and Dyna-Balance eliminates rotor wobble when you’re really cranking that lure in.
