A WEST Australian rock fisherman has landed a snapper of a lifetime near Albany, south of Perth.
Albany local Nathan Brown was fishing with mates recently when he caught the monster red that weighed just under 16kg, or 35lbs in the old scale. The snapper measured 112cm and while shy of the 18.4kg Australian record, is believed to be the biggest ever caught off the rocks in Australia.
Brown told getfishing.com.au, “I can’t describe the feeling of when I caught it”.
His mates had caught a few big snapper that morning and he thought to himself “This just isn’t fair, when am I going to hook one?”
At roughly 12pm his rod finally buckled over and the rest is history.
Brown and his mates landed five snapper for the day and were busted off five or six times by strong fish.
“If it wasn’t for the 100lb leader I was using I would have lost the fish”, he says.
