COFFEE is a big part of my morning fishing routine. Early mornings on the water, or on the way to the ramp, aren’t complete without a decent hit of caffeine.
But I’m no coffee snob! Instant coffee in the wee hours of the morning tastes damn good, as does “servo” coffee while refilling the boat or car.
What about camping or while onboard a boat? There are many options these days with coffee bags, pour over bags and instant coffee satchels. They all taste great and all have their place, but one option stands out in convenience and taste – the AeroPress Coffee Maker.
AeroPress has a cult following! And for good reason. They’re portable, lightweight and easy to use. They’re also very easy to clean.
AeroPress is a “plunge” style portable coffee maker. It’s slightly different, however, from the “French Press’ style of plunge coffee. These are usually glass, harder to clean and less convenient on the go.
The AeroPress is made of a tough plastic material and has three main parts, plus a couple of accessories and filters. It’s a simple matter of screwing the adding a thin paper filter to the filter cap and attaching it to the chamber. You then place it above your mug and add hot water inside the chamber and stir gently. Leave it a few seconds and insert the plunger. The rubber cap on the plunger pushes the coffee slowly through the paper filter into the mug and you’re left with a delicious cup of coffee. It tastes amazing and it’s so simple. Then its just a matter of quickly rinsing the aero press and it’s good to pack away.
I always take an AeroPress camping and they’re also useful on boats. I also use them at home sometimes. You can either use hot water from a vacuum sealed container or a Jetboil or similar.
There are a few different versions of the AeroPress and I own three variations.
The latest variation really caught my eye. The AeroPress Go Plus Travel System offers the same parts and function of the original AeroPress, but now it’s now housed in its own insulated mug with a travel lid. Why didn’t they think of this sooner? Now you can make a coffee wth no need to bring an additional mug. It’s a complete package.
There’s also a neat little screw-off compartment at the bottom of the mug to hold your filters. This is a great idea, however, unbeknown to her, my wife washed the mug without removing the filters and they all got wet.
Overall, the AeroPress Go Plus makes a good product great. The flavour of coffee and convenience when camping, boating or even at home, is unbeatable. And now with an insulated mug to hold everything together, it’s more convenient than ever.
