Big doggie landed in style!

SYDNEY based angler Marcello Bo and four of his good mates recently escaped the cold in favour of a week’s hot fishing onboard an Ocean Blue Fishing mothership in Vanuatu. As you can see by the accompanying photo, it was well worth the effort!

On the trip the boys reportedly caught everything from yellowfin tuna, GTs, wahoo, jobfish, blue marlin and eexperienced countless encounters with Vanuatu’s famous dogtooth tuna, in all sizes!

On the penultimate day of the adventure, Marcello’s heavy PE8 rod unfortunately became a two-piece due to a caring and sharing mate, an optimistic rod angle, heavy drag settings and a big feisty dogtooth. That left Marcello to use his new “backup” outfit – a Diawa Saltiga 63s and Shimano Biomaster 10000 combo – during a session that had the anglers against the ropes and the big doggies winning hands down.

Feeling undergunned, he was running 50lb braid, 60lb fluro leader and a River2Sea Spike jig when he hooked up … once it “woke up” the doggie’s first run shred 200m off the spool in seconds. With the skipper leading the fish into deeper water to get control of the situation, they avoided being cut off and luck stayed in the angler’s favour.

A 68kg dogtooth tuna was the end result! An incredible capture on any gear but Marcello landed this on what is effectively an inshore kingfish setup. Great effort!
