ABT title no.3 for Team Mercury

Team Mercury has achieved what no other AFC team has done before – secured a third straight AFC title.

Team Mercury, consisting of Darren “Dizzy” Borg and Ben Godfrey reportedly did it the hard way, coming from behind to pull off the competition’s tightest ever victory.

“Going into the final round at Tweed River we knew we had to win and catch a big fish, so we were fishing aggressively from the go and in the end it all paid off,” said team stalwart and bream specialist, Borg.

A 32cm bream weighing a mere 660 grams made all the difference. It beat the competition’s 540 gram fish to give Team Mercury the round and the title on count back.

“Were we thrilled? Most definitely!” Dizzy said.

The guys took the title fishing from a Nitro Z7 bass boat powered by a 150hp OptiMax outboard and manoeuvred by a MotorGuide Tour Edition electric trolling motor.

Along with Darren, Team Mercury consisted of fellow veteran Matthew Mott (bass), new comers and barra guns Al McNamara and Matthew Coleman and AFC regulars Dave Green and Ben Godfrey.

“Ben was the man who pulled in the winning fish and I can tell you we were relieved to see it into the boat,” said Dizzy, who admitted there were certainly some celebrations after the final day.

And what about next year?

“Well, it’s a bit hard to stop now – we’re on a roll,” Dizzy said. “We’ve got a pretty good team at the moment and we know how to work together so yeah, we’ll be back.”
