Kayak fishos who spend a lot of time on the water know how tiresome it can be having to constantly put fishing rods down to back out of tight spots. In small creeks and snaggy areas this can be a regular occurrence. Wind and current can also put a halt to fishing and have you reaching for a paddle more often.
US-based Backwater Paddle Company has come up with a solution for this scenario with an innovative product that is used one-handed to maximise fishing time and ease of manoeuvrability on the water. As per the product description, the Predator and Piranha are two models of timber hand paddle, with some inbuilt extra design features.
The Piranha is the larger of the two paddles, both of which feature a hook design on their blades to help you retrieve snagged lures, steady your kayak as you come alongside a platform, retrieve buoy lines and many other uses. Both the Predator and Piranha come with a lanyard for securing to your kayak or wrist and are nice and light – the Predator weighs only 5oz.

While not currently available in Australia stores, it is expected that the Piranha and Predator hand paddles will soon be sold through local outdoor retailers. They can currently be bought online at www.backwaterpaddles.com for $19.95 US.
Fisho will also be field testing these paddles in the near future, so we’ll keep you posted.
