A History of Charles Alvey and Son book

AUTHOR Stephen Duffield has put together a comprehensive book covering the history and full catalogue of Alvey products.

Alvey has been manufacturing reels in Australia for the past 105 years. It’s an iconic Australian fishing brand that has served the needs of fishos for generations.

Founded in Queensland during the 1920s when Charles Alvey saw the need for a fishing reel that was easy to use, easy to cast, simple to maintain, and solidly constructed. At the time, Alvey painstakingly produced about twenty reels per week. His work was so meticulous that anglers called the Alvey “The reel you cannot wear out.”

Over 500 pages long, Duffield’s book looks back at the Alvey family and the beginnings of this iconic brand. The book delves into the design of side cast reels, the imitations, and the evolution of this uniquely Australian product.

There are old photos, advertisements, and of course a full catalogue of reels from early beginnings to some of the latest side cast reels and more. Each decade is covered in great detail.

There are family profiles and profiles of Alvey staff throughout the years. Plus, the book includes Alvey Product Value Guide.

If you have any interest in the history of Australian fishing, I would highly recommend this book. The Value Guide would also make it an essential purchase for tackle collectors, antique dealers or just anyone who owns a few of these rare gems.

A History of Charles Alvey and Son comes in two editions. Firstly, the Trade Edition is a soft cover version (300 printed) with 512 pages. Then there’s the Limited Edition. This limited edition features a printed hard case cover and handcrafted slipcase to protect your investment. It also includes a complimentary copy of Supplement’s No. 1 and No. 2 and the “front” pasted end contains the numbered book of 100; with signatures of Bruce Alvey, Glenn Alvey and author Stephen Duffield.

The Trade Edition can be purchased on the Alvey website for $317.95 and the Limited Edition for $529.95. While the price may seem high, this book has been printed in Australia with over 500 pages of thoroughly researched content.

It’s a fantastic book and deserves to be on the book shelf of any Alvey Reel fan.
