WA FISHERIES Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly is inviting recreational fishers and community members in Perth’s growing northern suburbs to take part in public consultation that will help determine where a new artificial reef will be situated.

Consultation on the Northern Artificial Reef Project, which will deliver the seventh purpose-built artificial reef in WA, will commence on August 1, 2018.

Public consultation will be done in two stages for interested fishing clubs and community members, especially in Perth’s northern suburbs, to identify community expectations, aspirations and understand preferred reef locations.

The first stage, which will run throughout August, will include information nights at various fishing clubs to explain how various artificial reef designs work and initial constraints mapping, as well as a survey.

In September, phase two of the consultation will focus on determining the community’s preferred location for the reef, and will incorporate an online survey.

Funding for the $1 million reef will come from recreational fishing licence fees that are invested back into recreational fishing through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund.

“The new Northern Artificial Reef will not only enhance fishing experiences for recreational fishers, but, like the other artificial reefs established or in development around WA, it will also be a drawcard for tourists,” said Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly.

Details about the public consultation are available HERE.
