We caught up with the 2024 winner of the Sea-Doo FishPro, Ian Mathews, to learn more about his experience.
Ian was the lucky winner of a Sea-Doo FishPro Scout in the 2024 Pirtek Fishing Challenge. He first heard about the Pirtek Fishing Challenge through a work colleague and has participated every year for the past seven years.
“I sign up to support the causes, and I buy the shirt every year,” he shared. Although bad weather prevented Ian from fishing in 2024, his entry was enough to secure him the Sea-Doo FishPro prize. “In the past, I’ve gone out on my boat with friends, but now I can go solo on the SeaDoo FishPro,” he said.
Ian’s winning moment came as a complete surprise. “It felt a bit surreal—I don’t often win competitions. But when I heard Michael Guest’s voice, I knew it was legitimate,” he recalled.
Winning the Sea-Doo FishPro Scout has since transformed his fishing routine and even his perception of PWCs. Although an experienced boat fisherman, Ian had never considered owning a personal watercraft (PWC) for fishing. “I had never thought about buying a jet ski,” Ian admitted.
After winning, his Sea-Doo FishPro Scout Ian had to obtain his PWC license to use it. “The test was simple—just 15 questions,” he said. While it took some time to get used to operating it, starting on a lake helped him build confidence before venturing into ocean waters.
Ian highlighted its stability as one of the most surprising features: “You can sit sideways on the seat without worrying about balancing. It’s also so much easier to clean compared to a boat.”
