ICOM Australia has released its IC-M23 Float ‘n’ Flash VHF handheld marine radio. The unit combines the buoyant construction of previous Icom handhelds with a new flashing feature, allowing it to be detected in the water. The IC-M23 is the smallest and lightest floating 5W handheld marine VHF radio currently available.
The new flashing feature on the IC-M23 works by using water as a conductor to complete an electrical circuit. When the contacts on the radio hit the water, a small electrical charge can reach the LED, and the radio will begin to flash, allowing it to easily be identified in the water during low-light conditions. The radio will flash in the water even when turned off, making the feature even more versatile.
The unit also features an extremely small and light construction, weighing approximately only 260 grams. A water-ingress protection rating of IPX7 is carried by the IC-M23, meaning that not only is it small and light, it is also strong and durable. Energy-saving circuitry has also been implemented into the IC-M23, as a 3.7v/1500mAh battery is all that is needed to power the radio for 10 hours.
The IC-M23 is available for under $350 RRP.
