WITH 70 anglers descending on Victoria’s Bemm River for the latest round of the Daiwa-Hobie Bream Kayak Series it was going to take a standout performance to take a win.
As it turned out, ACT bream angler Jonathan Chen was the man for the job. Chen led the event from start to finish with an impressive 6/6, 5.28kg bag, in the processing relegating Steve Fields to second, 6/6, 4.97kg.
Chen made the long journey to the flats near the mouth of the system, targeting fish holding on the drop offs. Using his skill as a bream angler he tailored his approach to the conditions. Early in the session when the wind was lighter Chen targeted fish holding in the deeper section of the drop offs with a Damiki Shrimp rigged on a 1/28th TT jig head. Chen would cast his lure up on to the shallower section of the flat before hopping it down the face of the drop off before allowing it to rest on the bottom, where the larger fish would suck the lure off the bottom.
“I really had a great tournament; I was getting up to twenty fish a day. I would like to thank Searing Tackle for all their support, it really makes it easier to come to these events when you have a support network”, said Chen.
Steve Fields showed his ability to come back strong on the second day with an impressive 3/3, 2.72kg bag to rocket him up the scoreboard and claim a top two finish. To compile his 6/6, 4.97kg bag Fields targeted the muddy weed flats in the western section of the lake and concentrated his fishing on areas with a change in contour. Fields targeted these areas with an Atomic Double Deep Crank 38 in ghost gill brown.
“Each day I had my limit by 8.30am and was able to spend the rest of session in search of upgrades”, explained Fields.
The Hogs Breath Boss Hog went to Joel Crosbie who caught a cracking 1.23kg Bemm River bream at 11 o’clock on day two. Crosbie’s fish came on a Squidgy Wriggler rigged on a 1/16th Nitro jig head, which he slowly hopped across the bottom. “I thought I had hooked a good quality flathead, it really didn’t feel like a bream fight”, explained Crosbie.
