Mysterious bass catch

FISHO reader Mark Koosache sent us an email yesterday containing a photo of a rather unusual catch.

According to Mark: “I caught this bass (below) at Tallowa dam on Feb 16 Saturday afternoon about 6pm. It was in 5.5m of water and took a river2sea deep diver. It measured about 20cm Fork length. The bass was released in perfect condition as I didn’t want to harm it in any way”.

“I was shocked at its brilliant colour, nobody I have shown nor asked is able to offer me an explanation as to its occurrence”.

Well Mark, we contacted Fisho’s resident fish expert Dr Ben Diggles who had this to say about your “golden bass”.

“It’ll be hatchery stocked most likely, and the fish is likely to be an albino – pretty common to see one or two of these in a run of fish in a hatchery… Usually they get picked off when small in the wild, but they survive in the hatchery”.

Hope that clears up the mystery Mark. Has anyone else encountered one of these brightly coloured bass? Let us know.
