Marlo’s Monster Bream come out to play

FIFTY four anglers competed in the Victorian state title round of the Daiwa Hobie Kayak Series held at Marlo.

Recent flooding and foul weather added an extra element of difficulty with the water still fairly stained and plenty of snags floating downstream and the wind rarely below 25-30 knots.

Fortunately, nobody told Marlo’s XOS black bream the conditions were less than perfect, there were big fish aplenty.

There can’t be too many fisheries on the mainland where a full limit of fish averaging over a kilo will only get you fourth and the eventual winners fish averaged over 1.3kg each.

The Boss Hog Bream prize of $100 sponsored by Hogs Breath Cafe went to Matt Petrie with a cracking honker of 1.76kg (pic above).

Third place went to Chris Burbidge with 6/6 for 6.495kg, Jason Meech, from the NSW Central Coast scored second place overall.

But the standout for the weekend, who scored consistently big bags was Greg Lewis from Hobie Australia. He had his day one bag by 9.30am and after a late start on day two caught two fish over 40cm to the fork on consecutive casts to fill his bag by 9am, eventually bringing over 4kg for three fish on day two.

Lewis’s 6/6 total of 7.785kg was an immense feat against a top notch field of anglers.
