Fisho recently received a report from Ash Smith of Arno Bay Fishing Adventures, the well known big snapper charter specialists based in South Australia.
According to Ash, Paul Hill from Adelaide fished with five of his mates in January with a plan to land some PB snapper on bait and soft plastics. The trip out of the famed big snapper grounds of Arno Bay was organised by Paul’s mate and keen angler, Gene Vaninetti, who was after a soft plastic PB. Gene had also organised for himself and two others to get onboard a day before the “trip proper” as they had some spare time. The 1st day saw some good snapper up to 8kg landed and Gene scored his soft plastic PB with a fish of over 7kg.
Day 2 saw all six mates onboard. Soon after hitting the snapper grounds Paul took the trip to a new level by landing a solid 27lb snapper. He then followed it up with a knobby-nosed 30-pounder only minutes later (see main photo) – much to the amazement of the other five mates who were catching good snapper, but nothing in the same class.
As the fishing slowed, Paul sat the next hour or so out. As the last snapper was pulled in before they called it a day and headed for the cleaning tables, Paul made the comment “the fish are still there … it just takes skill.” He went on to rebait and dropped it to the bottom again, right alongside the lone angler still fishing. He flicked the bail arm over and soon screamed “I’m on again!” Paul’s last snapper weighed 24lb which took his total to over 80lb from three fish! Clearly the “best on ground” in a day to remember.
