Affordable Performance – Daiwa Black Label SSS 6101MLXS

WE all know that quality comes at a price. Pick up Daiwa’s new Black Label SSS 6101MLXS spin stick and you could be forgiven for assuming it has a stratospheric price tag. You’d be wrong. The Black Label isn’t cheap – no really good rod ever is – but it’s not out of reach. With super lightweight construction, quality guides and reel seat/grip set up, RRP is less than $300. That’s a serious bit of gear for the price.

The sleek new Black Label comes in two ranges – the Versatile series and the Technical series. Both feature HVF graphite blanks, Fuji Sic Guides, Daiwa surround hold reel seats with custom alloy componentry. The Versatile series uses EVA while the Technical series is fitted with triple A cork handles. Both rods also come with the “SSS” label (short for “Skippin’, Shootin’, Shaky”), describing the many fishing styles anglers employ while out on the water.

The 6101MLXS is the heaviest and longest rod in the Technical range and has proven ideal for estuary lure fishing for species such as jewfish and large flathead and also for extracting impoundment bass from their snaggy homes. Team Daiwa testers report that the slightly longer cork handle, combined with the whippy top-end, make it a dream to cast while the high modulus graphite construction results in outstanding sensitivity.

The rod is rated for lines in the 5-12lb class, making it a definite option when light tackle fishing for snapper and even kingfish.
