NT fisho Andrew Russell has found himself $10,000 richer after reeling in a 73cm tagged barra at Woods Inlet, just five kilometres away from Cullen Bay where it was released.
Each time a tagged fish is caught, the winner gets to donate an extra $1,000 to a Million Dollar Fish charity of their choice and Andrew chose Cancer Council NT. The donation will go directly towards the charity’s nurse-led oncology clinics and services for Territory cancer patients.
Andrew was fishing with his neighbour and about to call it quits when the fish was hooked.
“We were on the last two casts of the day when I snagged a barra and saw the tag. I was pretty nervous reeling the fish in, but lucky for me I landed it,” said Andrew.
“I’m going to split the cash with Andrew (his neighbour) and get out onto the water as soon as possible to hopefully catch one of the 11 fish eligible for a million dollars out there, he said.
Season 9 will run till 31 March 2024, with 11 barra worth a million and 98 barra worth $10,000 still swimming in the Territory’s pristine waters waiting to be caught.
The first $10,000 barra was caught off the rocks at Stokes Hill Wharf by Zain Lopez on 1 October, just hours after Season 9 began.
The competition promises a million dollars to a lucky angler this year thanks to a number of initiatives that will be introduced throughout the season.
