NSW DPI Fisheries is currently investigating a suitable site to deploy an offshore artificial reef off Moruya Heads to increase fishing opportunities in the Batemans region. The new artificial reef is proposed to be installed approximately 3.5 km north east of Moruya Heads by the end of 2020.
The Batemans artificial reef is scheduled for completion by the end of 2020 and is being implemented using funds from the Recreational Fishing Trust and Restart NSW. A specific design for the Batemans artificial reef will be subject to a government tender process but is likely to involve a steel tower design. The reef will have at least 20 metres of safe vessel clearance above the structure. The actual footprint area of the reef will approximately 320 m2.
The preferred site is a sandy area in 40-45 metres of water situated approximately 3.5 km north-east of the Moruya River entrance. The site is located within the Batemans Marine Park general use zone. The proposed centre point of the artificial reef is -35°53’17.009″S, 150°12’21.384″E.
