THE 2012 Berkley Evinrude Team Series (BETS) kicked off last weekend on Sydney Harbour. Unfortunately the 91 teams competing had to battle vicious southerly winds and generally miserable conditions to start off their BETS 2012 campaigns.
Whilst some competitors chose to pull up stumps early due to the weather, most hung in for as long as they could. For all but a few boats, the outer limits of the Harbour were out of reach so fish had to be found closer to home. Each of the top three teams did just that and interestingly managed to secure a thumper Sydney Harbour bream to boost their bag.
With five teams exceeding the 3.5kg bag mark it was a wet and windy wait to see whose catch would reign supreme. Team Marineware’s Dan Frost and Mick Torok, no strangers to BETS success with a win and top places in recent years, showed they are not a team to be discouraged by a little wind and rain! The pair weighed in a cracking 4.42kg bag of Lane Cove River bream to take out 1st place and a prize of $4500 and an Engel Prize Pack. The team’s 1.38kg bruiser was the heaviest the team had presented at any bream tournament and their smiles lit up a grey and sodden weigh-in.
Team Pure Fishing’s Dean Hammond and Neil Foley also latched on to beast that weighed in at 1.39kg and helped ease the team’s bag to 3.93kg and 2nd place.
With a packed cash and prize list to 10th place and a fantastic Prize Pack courtesy of event sponsor TT Lures for the anglers who held out long enough to secure a place between eleventh and twentieth it was a great start to the 2012 Series, if pretty miserable weather wise at the end.
Round Two will be held on Lake Macquarie – more info at: www.betsbream.com.au
