Big Gippsland bream

SPRING is almost here, but if you put in the work, the winter bite down in Victoria is still running hot.

Here are a couple of solid bream taken from one of the beautiful Gippsland rivers by local angler, Justin Dingwall.

“It was a beautiful day on the water without a cloud in the sky, which made for a tough session with the bream being finicky and the bites very timid. We found ourselves casting our lures deep into heavy structure concentrating on the shadows. This ended up being our main method of our success,” said Justin.

“It sounds crazy but we had to go light to get the bites and fished 4lb leaders through the timber. The lure of choice for the day was the 2.5inch Zman Grubz in Gudgeon on a 1/16th jighead fished dead slow, allowing the lure to free fall. We used very slow lifts with the bream grabbing the lures on the drop.”

The end result of this persistence were two corkers, one going 43cm and the other 44cm and both fat fish in excellent condition.
