ON today’s ABC Radio National Breakfast program, reporter Mike Woods revealed a disturbing illegal fishing practice occurring along the Murray River.
According to the report, Fisheries authorities in Victoria are investigating organised gangs they allege are plundering Murray cod during the closed breeding season.
Locals living on the Murray say a group of up to 100 men have been stealing the fish to illegally supply the black market restaurant trade.
Ecologists say that the illegal fishing is putting further strain on the health of the Murray cod, which has come close to being wiped out in recent years.
