THE National Capital was the venue for a social carp fishing event last weekend on the shores of Lake Tuggeranong in Canberra’s south.
The annual event, hosted by the Tuggeranong Vikings Fishing Club, attracted good numbers of entrants although carp numbers were down on previous years.
According to one of the event’s organisers Victor Bilow, “the carp must have wised up to this year’s challenge as the carp and redfin numbers were down (31 fish compared to several hundred for previous years) possibly due to the weather … but a good time was had by all participants”.
The mystery angler prize of $1500 worth of paint work, repairs, car detailing or Speedliner provided by Wizard Paint Repairs was won by Chloe Kelly (Tickled Pink) of Wanniassa.

0-6 years boys Carp – No fish weighed
Girls 0-6 years Carp – Kira Dawes 980 gram
0-6 years Redfin – No fish weighed
7-12 years Redfin – Ben Allard 320 grams
13-16 years Redfin – Hayden Birrell 150 gram
Open Biggest Carp – Mika Papinnieni 11.2 kg
Open Biggest Redfin – Kent Walker 175 grams
The age group category prizes without fish weigh-ins were decided via a ballot to show the club’s appreciation for the youngsters’ efforts and keep them fishing went to the following young fishos:
