THE 2012 Barra Classic, run by the Darwin Game Fishing Club, was recently held on the Daly River in the Northern Territory. The hotly contested event concluded after producing good numbers of fish and plenty of good times for all who attended.
Once again, Fisho’s David Green figured prominently in the final rankings with his team Takin’ a Punt, which also consisted of Kelvin Williams and Peter Washington, taking out Champion Mixed Team and 3rd overall.
Greenie spoke to Fisho shortly after returning home late last week after a five and a half week fishing road trip from the Gold Coast to the NT. Greenie and his mates accounted for a total of 421 barra during the epic journey, with the biggest being a 110cm beauty. He says trolled Poltergeists were his team’s top lure during the Classic, especially those lures which featured some innovative fluoro paint jobs courtesy of his mate Kelvin Williams – see June Fishing World for more details on these wild custom paint jobs.
Greenie reports that while his team caught a lot of fish during the Classic, there were lots in the 40-50cm range and not as many barra of 70-80cm. The Champion Angler for the comp, Trevor Robb, reportedly put huge (around 45cm) soft plastics to good use and nailed a swag of fish on the first day using the “slow rolling” technique.
