The Shooters and Fishers Party has announced it is running two Senate candidates in this weekend’s federal election.
The NSW Federal Senate candidates are well known fishing identity Alistair McGlashan and southern NSW based hunter and fisho Jim Muirhead.
One of Australia’s best-known fisherman, McGlashan says he’s joining the fight to protect our right to fish and the Australian way of life.
“I’ve been lucky enough to turn my passion for the outdoors into a business and I can see the storm clouds gathering over the future of our sport,” said McGlashan.
Spending more than 200 days a year on the water he says he’s aware of the threats facing anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts. McGlashan also says he’s a conservationist and is becoming increasingly concerned by the looming threat of increased lockouts in fishing areas.
“Locking people out isn’t the answer. If we want to conserve the environment we need to educate because with understanding comes appreciation and a genuine desire to protect it,” added McGlashan.
“Like all Aussies I love the outdoors and think it would be a great shame to lose our right to enjoy this magnificent country. Enough is enough. It’s time to stand up and protect out right to fish.”

Jim Muirhead says he sees unity between the various clubs representing shooters and fishers as the best way forward:
“All the clubs in Australia need to work together, as this is the only way that we will survive and keep enjoying the activities we love,” said Muirhead.
Jim Muirhead is a shooter and fisher living in Finley, in southern NSW and belongs to numerous hunting and fishing clubs.
“My job takes me around the Southern Riverina. I have been an active hunter and fisher for over thirty five years,” he said.
Muirhead is also the Vice President of the South West Anglers Association which covers around 30 fishing clubs and approximately 2,300 anglers.
If we don’t stand up for our rights and use our vote this election, we’ll lose those rights,” says Muirhead.
“I’m also Chairman of the Riverina branch of the Shooters and Fishers Party and these days I reckon it’s us facing extinction,” he concluded.
