The Rising Lippa4Life is the result of conservation-minded US sportfishermen requesting a tool to control large freshwater fish such as steelhead, salmon and trout during hook removal and release.
The aim was to minimise any physical contact with the fish and thus improve its chances of survival.
The Lippa4Life is used to clasp the fish’s lower jaw to facilitate hook removal, but unlike other grips that feature opposing jaws that make contact when closed, the Lippa4Life’s jaws do not close entirely, to ensure the fish’s lower jaw tissue is not punctured. Moreover, the tool’s jaws are rounded to further minimise harm to the fish.
Here in Australia, the Lippa4Life has found favour with saltwater fly fishers, particularly up in the tropical north when flats fishing and especially when toothy species are encountered. Used in conjunction with the Rising Crocodile pliers for removing the fly or lure, fish can be released without being touched by hand. More recently, some Tasmanian trout anglers fishing the central highlands in spring have found the tool useful for holding the trout in the water and removing the fly without getting their hands wet in the frigid waters.
With a suggested retail price of $64.95 and being made out of a special blend of GlassNylon with a custom 18-8 stainless fastener this tool is rust proof and designed to last a lifetime. An accessory cordura holster with coil leash and hook sharpener can be purchased separately to accommodate the Lippa4Life.
