Fishing with Sydney FC

MANY top class sports people can be counted amongst Australia’s millions of keen anglers. One world class sports star who quickly comes to mind is recently crowned Moto GP world champ Casey Stoner. Among the ranks of NRL, AFL, and rugby can also be found many keen fishos. High profile sports such as golf and boxing also have their share of passionate anglers.

Fishing World has featured many fishing sporting celebrities over the years, including top class cricketers, footy players, and former olympians.

Recently we were contacted by PR for current A-League soccer team, Sydney FC, to see if we’d like to do a story with a couple of the players. As it turns out, Sydney’s young guns Nicky Carle and Terry Antonis are as passionate about casting a line as they are about the “world game”. The boys recently took some time away from the paddock for a bit of Q&A with Fisho.

Q&A with Terry Antonis:

FW: When did you first start fishing and where?
TA: I first started fishing when I was 4 years old and the first place I went fishing was under the Spit Bridge in Sydney.

FW: Where do you mostly fish?
TA: I still do most of my fishing under the Spit Bridge near Manly.

FW: Do you own a boat?
TA: No we don’t own a boat, we do most of our fishing off the rocks or a wharf.

FW: Do any of the other guys in your team like to fish?
TA: Nicky Carle loves to fish as well.

FW: What is your favourite fish and type of fishing method?
TA: I love fishing for bream.

FW: What is your most memorable catch?
TA: I once caught a 4kg bream from the wharf at the Spit Bridge.

FW: Do you have a dream fish you hope to catch one day?
TA: One day I’d love to catch a marlin.

FW: Where would you most like to fish if you ever get the chance?
TA: I’d love to go deep sea fishing, doesn’t matter where. I just want to head out into the ocean to try to catch a marlin.

FW: Have you ever visited an exotic fishing destination?
TA: No I haven’t unfortunately.

FW: Do your sporting commitments leave you little time to fish?
TA: Playing and training as well as the work we do in the Community with junior clubs and schools doesn’t leave me with much time to fish unfortunately.

FW: Are there any similarities between fishing and soccer?
TA: Yes. If you don’t prepare properly for either fishing or football then you don’t have much chance of success.

Q&A with Nicky Carle:

FW: When did you first start fishing and where?
NC: I first began fishing when I was seven years old at The Entrance when I was on holidays but I really got into it as a teenager with my brother in law.

FW: Where do you mostly fish?
NC: I fish mostly in Sydney Harbour or down at Jervis Bay if I have a bit of time.

FW: Do you own a boat?
NC: No, not at present but I did when I was living and playing in Newcastle. My brother in law has a boat and I generally go fishing with him.

FW: Do any of the other guys in your team like to fish?
NC: Young Terry Antonis likes to fish.

FW: What is your favourite fish and type of fishing method?
NC: I love to go fishing for kingfish.

FW: What is your most memorable catch?
NC: Without doubt the 80kg striped marlin I caught off Jervis Bay. It took me 90 minutes to bring it in.

FW: Do you have a dream fish you hope to catch one day?
NC: No. I already caught my marlin.

FW: Where would you most like to fish if you ever get the chance?
NC: I’d love to go fishing at South West Rocks one day. I have been told it is pretty good up there.

FW: Have you ever visited an exotic fishing destination?
NC: I went reef fishing on a tour off Port Douglas once when I was on holiday.

FW: Do your sporting commitments leave you little time to fish?
NC: Unfortunately it does. With training and promotional visits it is hard but when I get some time I love to head up to The Entrance with the kids.

FW: Are there any similarities between fishing and soccer?
NC: Not really. I love the fact that fishing is so peaceful and it allows me to switch off from soccer for a while.
