Fisho celebrates 40 years!

The August edition of Fishing World, due out next week, celebrates a milestone with 2009 representing the magazine’s 40-year anniversary. First published in 1969, the magazine fast gained a reputation as a groundbreaking sportfishing publication. The magazine initially started out as The Australian Angler and later morphed into The Australian Anglers’ Fishing World. From there, it became Fishing World – or Fisho as it’s colloquially known to its legions of readers.
To commemorate the long-standing success of this iconic Australian magazine, the August issue will be available in two versions – as a “standard” 164 page edition complete with free Hobie kayak DVD for $7.95, or alternatively a stylish 40th Anniversary Special collectors’ edition. The latter edition comes with a special gold foil embossed cover and a free 10cm Rapala X-Rap lure (valued at $24.95) emblazoned with the Fishing World masthead. The 40th Anniversary Special Edition is priced at $12.95 and will be available in very limited numbers from selected newsagents. First in, best dressed!
Both editions will feature a 32-page 40th Anniversary section, which takes readers back over the past four decades of the magazine and highlights the evolution of sportfishing in this country, including the advances in tackle, boats, and more. A reprint article titled Something Personal by founding editor Ron Calcutt will provide an opportunity for readers, especially younger readers, to check out the work of one of Australia’s best ever fishing writers and also view a selection of film maker/photographer Ossie Emery’s timeless black and white images. The legendary Vic McCristal also contributes to this 40th section, as do many other iconic fishing writers and personalities.
We also include our usual mix of practical and informative fishing articles and columns, plus the regular Boat Fishing section, which features a test on the new Hobie Pro Angler kayak. All up, the August edition collector’s issue of Fishing World is a must have magazine for any serious angler. It’s worth getting hold of for the free Rapala X-Rap alone!

As part of our 40th celebrations we’ve also uploaded a four-part PDF version of the very first edition of The Australian Angler, which is available for downloading or reading from the links below. Additional historical material, including a video clip featuring highlights from the seminal 1970s TV show A Fisherman’s World, hosted by Ron Calcutt and filmed by Ossie Emery, will also be linked to the site soon.

Fishing World’s 40th Anniversary Edition hits the newsstands next week. Reserve your copy now!
