FIJI is a fishing paradise. From its coral reefs, shallow lagoons, deep canyons and countless rivers and creeks, Fiji has just about everything the visiting angler could want.
I’ve just returned from a fishing holiday in Fiji. It was a trip to celebrate my 40th birthday – and Fiji was certainly generous with the gifts, turning on some stellar fishing for everything from trevally to tuna.
Look out for a full feature article in the near future on fishing in Fiji. In the meantime, I thought I’d share details of one of the more memorable catches on our trip.
The fish (pictured) is a big barracuda caught on day one of the trip by Canberra angler John Cziesla. The fish was well over a metre long and was caught in a small creek near our resort while we trolled lures back to the jetty aboard our Freedive Fiji fishing charter.
John was using 10lb line and light estuary gear – but that wasn’t what made the catch so memorable.
Have a look at the lure hanging from the big ‘cuda’s gob! Yep, it’s one of those free Fishing World lures many readers would have received with their copy of the 40th anniversary mag back in 2009 – see below.
To be honest, I don’t even know what make and model the lure was. Needless to say, it’s one of John’s favourites now! (Ed: It’s a fantastic little 10cm Rapala X-Rap and unfortunately all remaining supplies have disappeared from the Fisho office, so they’re now collectors’ items!)
If you’ve still got yours in your tackle box, this weekend might be a good time to try it out!
