A FRENCH fisherman is lucky to be alive after surviving a crocodile attack in Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory.
According to the NT News, Frenchman Yoann Galeran, 29, had swum out to retrieve a dinghy in Gove Harbour when a saltwater crocodile attacked him around 8pm last night. The reptile grabbed Mr Galeran by the head in the attack.
The deckhand reportedly fought the crocodile off by punching it until he was able to get free from its grasp.
The crocodile returned for a second attack and Mr Galeran was again able to fight off the 2m beast before finally scrambling to safety in the dinghy.
His boss, Lisa Heathcote, said Mr Galeran was in a state of shock when he returned to their boat.
“He came back into the boat and said he had been attacked by a crocodile,” she said.
“He was laughing but I think it was shock.”
Ms Heathcote said Mr Galeran had bite marks to his head, neck and shoulders.
She took him to Gove hospital, where he was being treated last night.
