Gippsland bass stockings

The fish that many anglers call the best freshwater sport fishing species in Victoria is making a comeback in Gippsland.

Minister Responsible for Fisheries Joe Helper said he was pleased to announce the return of Australian bass stocking to Blue Rock Dam and Lake Glenmaggie.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to improve fishing opportunities for all Victorians because we understand that many Victorians enjoy recreational fishing with their family and friends,” Mr Helper said.

“Bass is back and there’s no doubt the news will delight anglers from all parts of Victoria who love the challenge of catching these exciting fish.

“The elusive bass were once stocked extensively throughout the area however in recent years numbers have begun to drop away as reliable supplies became scarce.”

As a result of a renewed stocking effort 50,000 Australian bass will be released into the two waterways. The last stocking of bass into Lake Glenmaggie and Blue Rock Dam took place in the summer of 2002-03.
