Gladstone Harbour contamination under public review

AN independent review into the bund wall failure at the Port of Gladstone, which resulted in outbreaks of diseased fish and is believed to have contributed to the death of seagrass, dugongs, dolphins and turtles in Gladstone Harbour is now underway. (See earlier related articles here and here).

The review of the Port of Gladstone was commissioned by the Australian Government in February 2013.

On 30 January 2014 the Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt MP, commissioned an addendum to the independent review so that an independent panel can also examine this latest information.

Individuals and organisations are invited to make submissions for consideration under the Terms of Reference until 28 February 2014.

The independent review panel comprising Dr Andrew Johnson, Ms Anthea Tinney and Dr Ian Cresswell will:

1. examine and report on information relevant to the design and construction and functioning of the outer bund wall of the western basin reclamation area that has become available since the (previous) Independent Review reported on its findings;
2. provide advice as required to assist with the department’s current review of the outer bund wall leak incidents in 2011 and 2012;
3. consider the adequacy of monitoring requirements and operations; and
4. seek submissions from relevant stakeholders on the design, construction and other matters relating to the subsequent leaking of the bund wall.

Information about the review, including the full Terms of Reference and submission guidelines are available online at www.environment.gov.au/bundwallreview.

Details of the review are available on the Department of the Environment’s website at
