Good times at Basin Flattie Classic

BASIN Lure and Fly, the South Coast fishing club behind the popular Southern Bream Series, staged its annual Flathead Classic on the weekend at St Georges Basin, a noted big lizard hotspot.

A total of 38 teams caught and released plenty of quality flatties in the lure and fly only event, as well as various bycatch including bream, trevally, whiting and snapper.

As has come to be expected with any event run by BLF, the comp was great fun and very social. Team Fishing World (Jim Harnwell and Ken Smith) competed in the new Fisho CXC 4.3 while Fishing World II (Harry Harnwell and Matt Phelps) slogged it out in the sometimes breezy conditions in Harry’s 3.7m tinny.

Some quality lizards were caught, with Scott Brown taking honours for the biggest fish with an 867mm croc.

The Flathead Classic is a family event, with junior anglers encouraged to enter and compete. It’s a top event and well supported by a range of sponsors including Pure Fishing, Fishing World magazine, Shimano, McCallum’s Tackleworld Nowra, Tonic Eyewear, Complete Angler Batemans Bay, Big E’s Flies, FG Blades and Battery World Albion Park.
