Illegal fisher cops hefty fines

A REC fisher has been ordered to pay over $3100 in fines and professional costs for possessing illegal fishing lines adjacent to Little River, near Wellington in the NSW Central West.

NSW DPI Director of Fisheries Compliance, Glenn Tritton, said fisheries officers from the Macquarie District found the man in possession of the illegal fishing equipment in March 2009.

“The Yeoval man was in possession of 10 rigged hand lines adjacent to the waters of Little River,” Tritton said.

“Wellington Local Court fined the man $500 and ordered him to pay $2600 in professional costs and a further $79 for court costs.

“This is a reminder to all recreational fishers that only two attended lines are permitted in general inland waters. “Spare lines should not be rigged with hooks or lures attached and should be properly stowed.

“Fishers are also reminded that they must be within 50 metres of their lines and within their line of sight at all times.”

Tritton said fisheries officers will continue to patrol waters within the Macquarie District to ensure fishers are doing the right thing following patrols of the Macquarie River during the recent June long weekend.

“During the long weekend, fisheries officers detected a range of alleged offences including fail to hold a fishing licence, take prohibited size fish, use unattended and excess lines in inland waters,” he said.

A total of 17 penalty notices ranging from $100 to $500 and three written cautions were issued by fisheries officers. One man was found in possession of an undersize Murray cod near Dubbo, while two other offenders were apprehended along the Macquarie River for using excess fishing lines.
