ANGLERS flocked to Nagambie from all over the country in pursuit of one thing; GoFish Nagambie’s infamous “$80k Murray cod”.

This year, the hometown advantage paid off as 18 year old local boy, Jono Moore landed his first metre cod, measuring 105cm on Saturday morning to claim the top spot on the leaderboard.

By chance, Jono and his mate ran into their hero and GoFish ambassador, Paul Worsteling from IFish TV at the local bakery after just getting off the water. Paul said:

“They had the biggest grins on their face. I asked them if they’d had a good morning on the water. They were shaking and said they reckon they’d just landed the winner”.

The story of the hook up is quite something – Jono, fishing in his third GoFish Nagambie, said: “it was my second morning casting big surface lures. The current was quick and I cast it in behind a log and the big cod smashed my lure and took me under the log. It took 5 minutes to get it out. And it was only just hooked.”

Johnno then managed to get it in the net for his first ever metre cod. It was a long night after that, as anglers still had 3.5 hours on Sunday to try and top the 105cm monster-size Murray cod, but it was too good a fish. It couldn’t be beaten.

As to what he’s going to do with the cash, Jono wants to buy a fully kitted out boat to pursue the rest of the big fish out in the local waterways, but mum has other ideas: She’s suggested he buy a block of land and eventually build a house on it.

The GoFish Nagambie event  saw 2,255 fish caught, compared to 1,460 in 2021.
