A 65-YEAR-OLD woman received “life threatening injuries” from a 10 kg mackerel after it jumped out of the water and slapped her in the neck.
According to an article in the NT Times, the incident took place in Darwin Harbour, and the victim, Belinda Bingham, was admitted to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition that afternoon.
“The woman was fishing in the harbour with her husband when a fish jumped out of the water and hit her in the chest,” said the St John Ambulance NT paramedic who treated the woman en route to hospital
“She fell to the floor of the boat with a large cut to the side of her neck. Her husband took her back to Channel Island boat ramp and police helped take her to the ambulance at the top of the boat ramp.”
“The fish’s fin injured the woman on the neck, just missing all major blood vessels,” he said. “She is very lucky.”
“It was like having your throat slit. My shirt was completely covered in blood”, said Belinda.
