FISHERIES officers in Swan Hill, Victoria, recently received a tip-off about an enormous illegal drum net that had been left abandoned on a secluded bank of Gunbower Creek in northern Victoria.
It’s the biggest drum net senior Victorian Fisheries Authority officers from that region had seen in more than 20 years on the job.
Thankfully, the net hadn’t been in the water for a while. Standing more than 8ft tall and with a diameter of nearly 6ft, this was one very well made illegal drum net capable of catching large numbers of big Murray cod, golden perch and aquatic wildlife.
The net was removed by officers and will be destroyed. Anyone found using illegal drum nets face penalties of up to $16,000 and/or 6 months imprisonment.
If you see or suspect illegal fishing, report it to 13FISH (133474) anytime. You can remain anonymous.
