ALTHOUGH we’ve been seeing some real hit and miss weather of late, the fishing has been pretty darn good. Surface action has improved and I am seeing more and more monster fish making their way back to boats, canoes and shorelines – especially around inshore and estuaries.
Young Central Coast angler James Moller has been finding a few nice fish recently including this monster 47cm bream caught on surface. James has accomplished a lot for his age. At only 16 years, he’s managed to land specimens that most anglers would be lucky to see in their lifetime – go James!
Here’s what he had to say about his latest catch:
“Yesterdays afternoon surface bream session in the northern arm of Broken Bay NSW consisted of the landing of many bream with a few around 35cm and one weapon, a few surface Flatties and a long tom roughly around 1m that danced and snarled with my Sugapen on his nose.
“The afternoon was my preferred conditions for topwater breamin with a fair amount of cloud cover paired with a rising tide. While working my Sugapen across the flats in a walk the dog manner, a huge dark shape materialised behind my lure a sudden pause had the water erupt behind my lure with no hookup. A short, sharp flick of the rod tip had my lure throw a tiny bit of water to keep his interest, and causing him to have another swipe.
“This time it was almost like a 50cm wild bass strike resulting in my size 12 decoy trebles finding a mangled home inside this bream’s jaw. After a few blistering runs over the shallow flats out into deeper water I had to guide its head through the cockle beds with a 50m walk to shore to claim the prize.
“All this resulted in 47cm worth of yellowfin bream on surface!”, he said.
That’s one hefty bream on surface. With fish like this already under his belt, we will certainly see more from this young angler in the future.
