Monster Hervey Bay longtail!

MALCOLM Crane, a regular client of Queensland-based charter operation Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing recently caught the pictured trophy sized longtail, or northern bluefin tuna.

Andrew Chorley from HBF&S reports the big longtail is one of two over 130cm taken recently by clients. He told Fisho that potential world record longtails are about if the correct line class is chosen.

“Not sure on the weight, it was caught on a 5-inch Streakz in bubble gum, 3/4 ounce 6/0 TT Headlockz jig head,” Chorley said.

According to Fisho’s Ben Diggles, “They (longtail tuna) get to at least 145cm and 36kg, with the all tackle world record being 35.9 kg taken by Tim Simpson back in 1982 off Montague Island.”
