THE Victorian Fisheries Authority is bringing Macquarie perch back. Their Snobs Creek hatchery team has been working with the Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI) to re-establish Macquarie perch in the Ovens River.

Recently, translocated broodfish and fingerlings bred at Snobs Creek were released into the Ovens to give the population a boost.

Genetic assessment of the Ovens Macquarie perch is still underway, but initial results indicate they’re present at most of the sites surveyed, with strong evidence of local recruitment, meaning there’s been some natural breeding too.
