Netting debate steps up as dumped bream discovered

FOLLOWING Fishing World’s coverage of recent large scale haul netting in NSW South Coast lakes, it has been revealed rec fishers have discovered numbers of slashed bream in the Narooma district’s Corunna Lake.

According to naroomanewsonline, recreational fishers from Narooma last Sunday stumbled upon up to 40 yellowfin bream slashed in half, presumably to allow them to sink, on the lake. (See pics supplied by witnesses below)

The fish were reportedly found in about 1.5 metres of water, 200 metres south of the main boat ramp on the east side of Corunna, in a small bay where there is an access track used by professional fishermen and others.

The fish had a slight smell so it is believed they’d been in the water for a couple of days. The bream were just under legal size.

A local ex-professional suspects poachers are to blame for the dumped bream, as the commercial fisherman who fishes Corunna is currently away and slashing and dumping undersize fish is not something licenced fishermen do.

Fishing World’s recent reports on the netting of Coila and Brou lakes have resulted in widespread anger amongst recreational fishers. Some regular visitors to the area who practice catch & release now say they won’t bother returning to fish the decimated waters and will travel elsewhere.

As naroomanewsonline reports, the bream fishing on Coila had been one of the best kept recreational fishing secrets with locals including fishing identity Steve Starling catching and releasing bream of up to 50cm in length from the waterways.
