FRESHWATER angling in Victoria has received a boost via the total stocking of more than 16,000 Atlantic salmon into Lake Bullen Merri and Lake Purrumbete near Camperdown.
The crater lakes of Purrumbete and Bullen Merri have long produced quality trout and salmon, a trend set to continue after each lake received a mix of yearling 30-60 gram salmon and two-year-old fish averaging more than 200 grams.
The two lakes were stocked annually with brown trout and rainbow trout, and also Chinook salmon when available. Fisheries Victoria says Atlantic salmon have been stocked this year to maintain a salmon interest in the lakes and as an interim arrangement until Chinook salmon become available again.
Atlantic salmon were last stocked into Lake Bullen Merri and Lake Purrumbete between 2002 and 2005.
