Permits required for fishing Tiwi Islands

The Northern Territory based Tiwi Islands Land Council has resolved that to fish rivers on Melville and Bathurst Islands, such as the classic Jessie and Johnson, permits were required from May 1.

This development is expected to mainly affect commercial fishing tour operators running motherships who have no existing agreements to fish or operate in Tiwi waters.

Existing land-based lodges pay for the right to fish and the Amateur Fishing Association of the Northern Territory (AFANT) has an ongoing agreement by which it can supply permits to fish to local non-commercial rec fishos.

If you want to fish these waters with a commercial mothership operator, Fisho suggests that you’ll need to check that they’ve got the necessary permit before booking.
