REDCLIFFE game fisherman Matt Price has become the first Australian to catch every species of billfish.
Price, 40, a member of the Moreton Bay Boat Club, was earlier this year accepted into the International Game Fish Association’s Billfish Royal Slam Club for catching all nine species of billfish.
Price, who only took up fishing in late 2008, caught the fish at Cape Moreton, Mooloolaba, the Gold Coast and Venezuela.
Typically, luck played a role in Price’s meritorious feat, as his capture of a broadbill swordfish – a species usually encountered in deep water at night – in 100m of water in the middle of the afternoon demonstrated.
