ACCORDING to a group of Brisbane based anglers, commercial netters are destroying a threadfin salmon sportfishery by netting large quantities of the prized fish at the mouth of the city’s river.
Via the Brisbane River Fishing facebook page, it has been revealed that tons of threadfin salmon are being netted from the Brisbane River.
Rec fishers who regularly fish the river say the practice is having a detrimental effect on the fishery and is unsustainable. The facebook page features a catch graph that appears to show that commercial fishing effort for the species has risen significantly in the last few years.
Concerned Brisbane anglers are urged to attend an information night this Wednesday July 15 at the Sailing Club, end of Quay Street, Bulimba where the issue will be discussed and the steps needed to try and ensure the future of the burgeoning local threadfin salmon sportfishery.
