Rec Fishers Rally at PM’s Community Forum

A RALLY in Perth yesterday was attended by around 150 recreational anglers who had turned up at short notice to voice concerns about the Commonwealth marine parks planning process.

The rally was held outside Labor’s Community Cabinet Meeting in the heart of the Labor stronghold of Fremantle.

Rec fishers were unable to gain access to the meeting and even the peak body in WA, Recfishwest, was refused access.

Nonetheless, the rally group, which was mobilised via the internet and word of mouth in just a few days, made sure the feelings of recreational fishers were noticed, with a well-behaved gathering that clearly outnumbered the various other interest groups there on the evening, including a couple of conservation groups.

Fishing combos were given out to kids and marine safety horns made plenty of noise, while the fishing rally received a great deal of media coverage on TV and radio, in particular.

There were a number of boats parked along the road in front of the venue for the Cabinet meeting, and plenty of “I Fish I Vote” placards on display.

A keen angler dressed in a shark suit was a highlight, while conservation groups – some may say appropriately – sported a mythical mermaid.

What's your reaction?
