Rec fishers to gather in Wagga Wagga for waterway health

ONE of Australia’s most accomplished anglers will be on stage in Wagga next Thursday to showcase fishing tips and advocate for the community’s involvement in habitat restoration.

Lubin Pfeiffer, host of Full-Scale Fishing Adventures, is well known for catching big fish right across the Murray Darling Basin and has represented Australia at World and Commonwealth fly fishing championships six times.

Lubin will reveal how to choose the right water, discuss lure selection, and other techniques such as best practice catch and release when chasing a big Murray cod.

“Wagga is in for a great night. I can talk all day about Murray cod but we also need to talk about what regional communities need to do now to ensure our children and their children get to appreciate these beauties,” said Lubin.

“I’m looking forward to sharing some advice and also helping to spread the message about the importance of habitat protection and restoration, through organisations like OzFish,” he said.

The Fish Focused Community Night will be at the Thirsty Crow, 153 Fitzmaurice Street, on 30 March, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

The free event is hosted by OzFish Unlimited, Australia’s only recreational fishing charity. OzFish engages and supports recreational fishers to be conservation focused and encourages habitat restoration of their favorite fishing spots.

The event will inform recreational fishers and other community members about the importance of ensuring the health of their local creeks and rivers, including the Murrumbidgee and outline how to get involved.

Luke Pearce from NSW DPI Fisheries will also provide an update on the habitat mapping project underway in the Murrumbidgee River. It will reveal the different habitat and outline priority areas for restoration.

Light refreshments will be available and spot prizes will be up for grabs. Early registration is essential, via the OzFish website: https://ozfish.org.au/event/fish-focus-community-night-wagga-wagga-march-2023/

This project has been funded by the NSW Landcare Program which is a collaboration of Local Land Services and Landcare NSW Inc, the Australian Government through the CRC Program and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.
