Rec fishing big news in the Territory

WHILE recreational fishing struggles to make news in Australia’s southern states – unless a large shark is involved – in the Northern Territory last week a bumper barra run-off season was the lead story on Darwin’s Channel Nine News.

And with the NT set to enjoy its best run-off fishing for many seasons knowledgeable locals aren’t surprised by the media coverage, in a state where the importance of recreational fishing to the state’s communities is championed loud and often.

As well known fishing personality Alex Julius wrote on ntnews.com.au, “It’s really so ironic that, while the rest of the Australian angling community is constantly battling ill-informed, fanging greenies and rabid, one-eyed animal liberationists, here in the Top End the promise of a great recreational barra fishing season is celebrated as headline news.”

“There’s no doubt that the next few weeks in particular will yield some amazing barra-fishing sessions for a multitude of anglers across the Top End’s big rivers.”

“And so it should be front page news!” wrote Julius.

Local experts like Julius say that once the wet season’s floodwaters begin to recede and the run-off begins barramundi will be lined up at the mouths of feeder creeks and river channels awaiting a feast. If you’re planning to get in on the action you’d better be quick!
