A 73 cm samsonfish tagged in mid-May, 2018, by Chris Cleaver fishing east of Shellharbour, NSW, has recently been recaptured.
After 126 days at liberty, Colin Griffiths fishing aboard the Black Pearl re-caught the samsonfish well north of its release location, this time off Wooli, northern NSW.
The samsonfish measured 74 cm on recapture and had travelled a straight line distance of 310 nautical miles (~ 575 km) while at liberty, smashing the previous record of 236 nautical miles (~ 435 km) for the longest distance travelled for a samsonfish released and recaptured in NSW as part of the NSW DPI Game Fish Tagging Program.
