THE findings of an economic study into the value of WA’s recreational salmon fishing season have been released.
The study was initiated through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF) and found that every year recreational fishers spend $331 million on gear, bait, ice, fuel, accommodation and food chasing the sportfish, with $251 million of that spent locally at fishing destinations.
Recfishwest, WA’s peak recreational fishing body, said its the abundance of the fish that underpins the fantastic recreational fishing experience. The study also reported that two out of three salmon caught by recreational anglers are released.
