THE ABC has reported on the good work of Macquarie River local volunteer and avid freshwater fisho, Colin Gordon.
Col has devoted countless hours to restocking his local freshwater systems around Sofala since the early eighties when a virus swept through the Macquarie and Turon rivers wiping out all of the Murray cod and freshwater catfish.
Col has also seen threats to the rivers from other factors like increased development, such as the latest proposal to divert more water from the Macquarie for mining.
It’s because of the work of people like Col and his group, the Sofala branch of the Central Acclimatisation Society, that delicate systems and species – such as the Macquarie River and trout cod – have recovered to the extent that they have.
The latest restocking effort has seen 8000 Murray cod and 5000 yellowbelly released into the Macquarie and Turon rivers.
